Team Kentucky-Indiana (University of Louisville, Ball State University and University of Kentucky) is announcing an art competition for their 2013 Solar Decathlon Phoenix House prototype. The artwork will be displayed/performed in the house during the 2013 Solar Decathlon competition (www.solardecathlon.gov) to be held at Orange County Great Park, Irvine, CA between September 22 and October 18.
Based on the past Solar Decathlon competitions, it is expected that an average of 20,000 visitors will go through each house during the public opening time. The competition also includes media events and time for each team to invite VIP guests. All this will provide ample exposure to the works of art exhibited in The Phoenix House.,
The artwork should be seen as part of the Communication contest, contributing to enhance the message and narrative of The Phoenix House as a house that can be quickly delivered and assembled to rebuild communities after a natural disaster, such as a tornado. The selected artwork will be consistent with the theme of the house, as symbolized by the Phoenix, the mythical bird that burned and resurrected from its ashes. It should also reflect the nature of the competition, which requires the house to be powered entirely by the sun, integrating a number of green building solutions.
The work can consist of art objects, music, light, digital animations or combinations of any of these to be displayed/showed inside and/or outside. Work requiring live performers will not be accepted. The artwork should also be integrated with the architecture of the house and complement the qualities of the interior and/or exterior spaces. The work must also comply with the competition rules.
The competition is open to all students of the University of Louisville, Ball State University and University of Kentucky, working individually or as teams. Work combining more than one art medium and interdisciplinary teams of students is strongly encouraged. The work will remain the property of the artist(s).
The competition will be held in two stages:
1. Ideas Submission date: Friday, May 31
Notification of winners: Monday, June 3
2. Submission deadline: Friday, August 2
Public exhibition: (August date TBA)
